H 265 hardware decoder amd

H.265 support was added with GCN 3 (Volcanic Islands) and H.265 10-bit with GCN 4 (Arctic Islands). Older GPUs may or may not be supported.

I have tried the following as well: GOM Player with HW acceleration (apparently no support for AMD hardware)  Intel & AMD CPUs and Nvidia GPUs That Support NATIVE Now, you do not need any special hardware to decode the H.265 content. However, hardware encoders ensure smoother payback with less CPU utilization. AMD releases its H265 codec encoder (open source sdk) for RX 4 Feb 2017 AMD releases its H265 codec encoder (open source sdk) for RX series YAHHHHHHHH I'm using 7-8 year old hardware in this video.

"if I was to use x265 encoding, would the hardware H.265 decoders properly decode it" -- testing is the only way to determine this. If you are referring to GPU/CPU hardware playback, this determined by the version of ASIC (quicksync,NVENC,VCE) on the system/GPU. H.265 / HEVC Decoding And Encoding – Parsec If the host does not have the capability to encode in H.265, it will revert the stream to H.264. If the client is a Windows computer or Android device, and it doesn't have the H.265 hardware accelerated decoder, it will revert to H.264. If the client is macOS High Sierra or better, it will revert to software decoding for H.265. Cheapest AMD or Nvidia series of cards that support HEVC decoding I have a AMD HD5700 series in my HTPC I went with to do h/w decoding of AVC. It doesn't seem to support HEVC so 4K video chokes badly with around 50% CPU utilization. The R390x in my gaming rig doesn't seem to support it either but the playback is fine probably due to the 5820k being beefy enough. HEVC/H.265 Hardware Decoder [Archiv] - 3DCenter Forum

I ask, because I'm working with FHD & UHD 10bit LongGOP H.264 footage and I don't appear to be getting any hardware decoding activity under Task Manager's GPU Performance under any of the Video Decode or Compute tabs with my AMD Radeon VII.
