Age of empires 2 widescreen fix

I have an issue with my monitor, video drivers, or the game. I recently purchased a widescreen 20.5” monitor and run a resolution of 1680 by 1050 pixels (anything less distorts text, pictures, etc). Whenever I start up Age of Empires in this resolution, it starts the game in a window. This is not only annoying, it makes it impossible to play
